It’s common practice for NFL teams to rework contracts to create more salary-cap space, and the moves generally also benefit the player (except in cases where he takes a legitimate paycut to stay).

Salary cap expands to $127 million for 2009

The salary cap will grow in 2009. Teams were notified that the salary cap is increasing over $4 million to over $127 million for this year, according to sources with two NFL teams.
