Playbook: NFC Sunday lookout

The Chargers defense has played a single high coverage 76% (104/170) of the opponents drop backs. They will also be forced to stack the box due to RB Doug Martin’s presence.

Nine really random things and whatever else is going on around the NFL…

As we do every week, let’s take a swing around the NFL, looking at a bunch of random things… 1. I spent some time in Chicago earlier in the week at the NFL’s annual Fall Meeting, and many of the topics addressed here are from the meeting. There were a bunch of issues discussed, but nothing more important happened than the introduction of Browns owner Jimmy Haslam III. I know it won’t exactly affect the team’s performance on the field today — or, likely won’t — but it is noteworthy. After years of having an owner in Randy Lerner who was never around, Haslam will be the opposite. He’s moving to Cleveland. He’ll be present, his family will be present… […]

On what Saints coach Sean Payton said… and didn’t say

Really nice job by Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune today for his interview with Saints coach Sean Payton. It was an exclusive and lengthy talk with Payton, who has been out of sight (but not out of mind) because of the Bounty Penalties. In fact, I think we learned a thing or two. Want a quick run-down of what stood out? OK then…. – This suspension has given Payton a chance to spend time with his kids. And that’s pretty cool. It seems coaches really do seem to relish this part of it, especially when they are forced to take a step back. A lot of them say that. But I really liked how Payton put his money where […]

My story live from Tahoe: When will Packers QB Aaron Rodgers benefit from Brees’ contract?

Contracts for NFL quarterbacks do not exist in a vacuum. So, when Saints QB Drew Brees earned a new deal, my mind immediately turned to a colleague. When will Packers QB Aaron Rodgers get similarly paid? “That stuff takes care of itself,” Rodgers told me yesterday. “I still have a few years left on my deal, and we’ll talk about that when we get there.” Perhaps. Or earlier. We’ll see. There are a lot of issues, and I tried to hit on many of them here. But Rodgers didn’t take a wait-and-see approach when discussing Brees’ deal. “You got to say he’s a fortunate man,” Rodgers told NFL.com. “I don’t think he’s complaining right now.“  No, I’d say not. One other […]

Nine really random things and whatever else is going on around the NFL…

Ian Rapoport dives into the past week starting with reports that David Garrard is the leader for the Dolphins’ QB job. While Matt Moore should be concerned, what about Ryan Tannehill?

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, on bounties and the NFC title game: “The NFL taught the entire league a lesson”

Much of the focus of the NFL’s bounty investigation has included talk of the 2009 NFC title game featuring the Saints and the Vikings. During that game, QB Brett Favre was repeatedly drilled, and he wound up limping from it. Unveiled yesterday was the NFL’s evidence that had Saints players and others pledging $35,000 to knock out Favre. Yikes. Our own Steve Wyche had a thorough look at all of this. Well today, after the Vikings’ walk-through, I talked with Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, who was on that team. We talked about plenty of things, including his knee, and a lot of our interview aired on NFL Total Access. There will also be an in-depth story on NFL.com Wednesday. But with […]

Nine really random things and whatever else is going on around the NFL…

As we do once a week (and in celebration of my 10-year Columbia University reunion being over), let’s take a brief swing through nine things going on around the NFL.

Why the Saints suspensions will actually help QB Drew Brees in his fight for a new contract…

This may sound a little weird… The Saints suspensions — from coach Sean Payton to GM Mickey Loomis to the players — have hurt the team. No doubt. Two key parts who built the team won’t be involved in some or all of the 2012 season, and a few players are appealing that reality, too. Some, as in the case of Jonathan Vilma, are doing so vehemently. And then there is QB Drew Brees. Hit with the exclusive version of the franchise tag, without a long-term contract, Brees is a little pissed. He didn’t mind saying so. And his comments haven’t led to any contract movement, Steve Wyche reports. Brees hasn’t said whether he’ll sign the tag if it’s that or […]
