Phillip Gaines of Rice emerging as a top DB prospect

There were 23 NFL teams represented — including a defensive backs coach from the Jacksonville Jaguars — at Rice’s pro day on March 17, when 11 Owls players worked out outdoors on FieldTurf. Phillip Gaines, CB (6-foot-0 1/8, 191 pounds) — Gaines, who has 31 1/8-inch arms, ran really good at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis (he had the second-fastest 40-yard dash time among cornerbacks at 4.38 seconds). On a windy day in Houston for Rice’s pro day and on a new turf surface, Gaines only ran the 60-yard long shuttle (11.24 seconds). A total of 40 representatives from 30 different NFL teams gathered at the pro day held at Rice on Monday, where seven players through a workout held outdoors on FieldTurf in 80-degree weather.

With the pro day for Texas being conducted on Tuesday, and the much-anticipated Baylor pro day behind held on Wednesday, the state of Texas is currently the epicenter for NFL teams scouting potential future pro players.

Not all pro days are created equal. At Rice, Texas Southern and Northern Illinois, for example, there was an absence of elite level prospects. Despite the lack of top-notch players, however, the participants deserve credit for giving their all in an attempt to make the pros.

Dillard shows off hands at Rice’s Pro Day

Among those catching passes from former NFL QB Jerry Rhome at Rice’s Pro Day, was WR Jarett Dillard, who showed very good hands during positional workouts and posted 4.50 and 4.53 times in the 40-yard dash.
