It’s official: QB Jay Cutler and the Denver Broncos are getting a divorce.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels met with NFL Network’s Scott Hanson during the annual owners meeting in Dana Point, Calif., and made the point that Jay Cutler was his quarterback. Period.

The Broncos and Jay Cutler appear headed toward a divorce after team owner Pat Bowlen voiced his displeasure with the way the quarterback has handled himself in recent weeks and gave his complete support to new coach Josh McDaniels, according to the Denver Post.

The Denver Post reports that while the Broncos feel a conference call between coach Josh McDaniels and quarterback Jay Cutler went smoothly, a source close to Cutler claims he came away doubting he will be with the club by the draft on April 25.

The beginning of Mike Shanahan‘s end as the Broncos’ head coach came last year when he asked team owner Pat Bowlen for a new practice facility, the Denver Post reported:

Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo comes with rave reviews. He greatly impressed the Broncos executives he had dinner with Saturday night in New Jersey, and it wouldn’t be overly surprising to see him wind up with the job.

But most league insiders believe Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, the coach the Broncos are interviewing Sunday morning, is the leader for the Denver job.

Even in making his exit, Mike Shanahan didn’t hide his affinity for Broncos owner Pat Bowlen or the Denver organization.
