Jimmie Ward was the main attraction of Northern Illinois’ pro day Friday, which drew representatives from 30 NFL teams, including the defensive backs coaches of the Colts, Giants, Lions and Bears. Ward (5-10 3/4, 197 pounds), who plays safety, was among 11 players who worked out. He didn’t run at the combine, but he posted times of 4.47 and 4.48 in the 40 on Friday. He had a 38-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump, as well as a 4.24-second short shuttle and 6.89-second 3-cone drill. Representatives from seven NFL teams gathered at the pro day held at Northern Illinois on March 8, where 11 NIU players (plus three from Eastern Illinois and one from Western Illinois) participated in a workout that was held indoors on FieldTurf. Two of the Huskies’ wide receivers were the main attraction, with Arizona Cardinals wide receivers coach Darryl Drake putting NIU’s duo through the workout.

Cornerback Josh Robinson attracted team reps to Central Florida’s pro day, and QB Chandler Harnish made the most of his chance to show off for scouts at Northern Illinois.
Not all pro days are created equal. At Rice, Texas Southern and Northern Illinois, for example, there was an absence of elite level prospects. Despite the lack of top-notch players, however, the participants deserve credit for giving their all in an attempt to make the pros.
Northern Illinois was among three teams holding pro day workouts on Friday, and that meant DE/LB Larry English (6-2 1/2, 251 pounds) was front and center. Gil Brandt also has updates on Mississippi State and Utah State.
