The Detroit Lions have traded quarterback Jon Kitna to the Dallas Cowboys.

Free agency kicks off Friday, but there will be plenty of headlines before then. Here is a quick look at some of the moves that might be made between now and then:

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has a host of issues facing the Lions, one of the most pressing being the quarterback position. More specifically, what he is going to do about pending free agents Jon Kitna and Daunte Culpepper.

A handful of high-profile quarterbacks are scheduled to be unrestricted free agents. Other well-known quarterbacks could be traded. Another talented but troubled one could be reinstated. All together, the collection of quarterbacks is going to create one of the most fascinating off-seasons in NFL history.

Though quarterback Dan Orlovsky will start today in place of injured starter Jon Kitna for Detroit today against Minnesota, he will have reinforcements on offense.

Once again, for yet another season, the quarterback carousel is swinging wildly. Changes now come by the week. In bunches. And this week is no different.

Quarterbacks Drew Stanton and Dan Orlovsky split reps for the second straight day on Thursday as the Lions practiced without starter Jon Kitna.

If the Detroit Lions didn’t have enough problems after losing 34-7 on Sunday to fall to 0-4, it looks like both of their top two quarterbacks suffered injuries against the Bears.

Matt Hasselbeck, Eli Manning, Damon Huard and Jon Kitna were all pulled in their respective games.

Hasselbeck and Manning were both yanked from the Seahawks-Giants game because of the score, as the G-Men crushed the ‘Hawks. Huard and Kitna were both ineffective and replaced by Tyler Thigpen and Dan Orlovsky, respectively.

The Lions currently have 34 passing yards and 19 rushing yards against Chicago.

Jon Kitna looks awful, and Calvin Johnson doesn’t have a single catch in the first half. The Bears have a solid defense overall, but they did come in ranked 28th vs. the pass.

When quarterbacks J.T. O’Sullivan and Jon Kitna face off this weekend, it’s another chance for 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz to see two of his projects in action.

Calvin Johnson just scored his second touchdown of the afternoon, this one on a 47-yard pass from Jon Kitna. The talented wideout from Georgia Tech now has 6 catches, 129 yards and 2 scores against the Packers.
