Lions assistant checks out Matt Armstrong of Grand Valley State

Representatives from 12 NFL teams — including an offensive line coach from the Detroit Lions — were present at Grand Valley State’s pro day on April 11, when seven Lakers players worked out indoors on FieldTurf. Matt Armstrong, C (6-foot-1 5/8, 298 pounds) — Armstrong — who was at the NFL Scouting Combine — ran the 40-yard dash in 5.18 seconds. He had a 32-inch vertical jump and 8-foot-10 broad jump. He did 24 lifts of 225 pounds on the bench press. Armstrong did not do the shuttle runs or three-cone drill. Armstrong — who was a three-time first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection (2010, 2012-13) — has 32 7/8-inch arms.

Grand Valley State’s Charles Johnson sprints up draft boards

Charles Johnson was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but his workout Monday in front of NFL scouts at Grand Valley State’s pro day could have the receiver vaulting up draft boards.

Another future pro from the small-school ranks?

The Grand Valley State Pro Day was held on March 9, with nearby schools Michigan Tech, Hillsdale College and Ferris State also sending players to work out. Representatives from 17 NFL teams, including an assistant linebackers coach for the Cincinnati Bengals, were in attendance to watch five players work out indoors on FieldTurf. Gil Brandt also had reports from Stillman College and Furman.
