Bradford impresses, Sutton doesn’t at ASU pro day

Representatives from all 32 teams were at Arizona State’s pro day Friday, including Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano and much of the Arizona Cardinals staff. Twenty players from Arizona State and nine former players worked out outdoors at Sun Devils Stadium. Carl Bradford, OLB: Bradford (6-1 1/8, 251 pounds) reminds a lot of people of the Ravens’ Terrell Suggs; he’s not quite in Suggs’ class, but his mannerisms and the way he plays are similar. Bradford ran the 40 in 4.68 and 4.70 seconds. He had a 4.37 short shuttle and a 7.06 3-cone drill. His arms are a bit short, at 30 1/2 inches. He looked very good in his linebacker drills Friday and will probably be a second-day choice, […]

Tavon Austin had a KABOOM!-worthy day in the ST. Louis Rams upset win over the Indianapolis Colts, but he also earned the That Helps No One award as he was started in approximately zero fantasy leagues.

Nine really random things and whatever else is going on around the NFL…

As we do every week, let’s take a swing around the NFL, looking at a bunch of random things… So, what’s been up? 1. The Jets play on Monday night, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to talk about what’s going on with them. Banged up, beat up and struggling, the Jets face a critical home game against the powerful Texans. And all eyes are on their quarterback situation. Rex Ryan said he’s sticking with starter Mark Sanchez, but for how long? When does Tim Tebow Time happen? At what point will Ryan said, “Screw it, let’s put Tim in?” Because, as people inside the building say, that’s what it’ll be. I mean, can’t you hear Rex saying that… […]

Nine really random things and whatever else is going on around the NFL…

As we do every week, let’s take a swing around the NFL, looking at a bunch of random things … So, what’s been up? 1. I cued up my Game Pass yesterday and checked out the Jaguars/Saints game… and I almost couldn’t believe what I saw. Where in the world did this guy still called Blaine Gabbert come from? Last year, the former first-rounder was a mess. Just scared and shaky, looking unprepared and fidgety in the pocket with no recognition skills. I didn’t shy away from criticizing him, wondering if it was all a big mistake. Meanwhile, Jaguars fans pointed out what a similar disasterbacle Eli Manning was a rookie … and that turned out fine. Based on Friday […]

My story: Looking back on the trip to see the debuts of Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck

Last week, I went on an eventful trip with a fairly narrow focus — Check out the preseason debuts of Broncos QB Peyton Manning and Colts QB Andrew Luck. Off to Chicago for Manning vs. the Bears and then to Indy for Luck vs. the Rams. What did I find? That as similar as Manning and Luck seemed from the outset, they are even more similar upon close examination. In a way, Luck is the ghost of Manning future, while Manning is simply trying to be the ghost of Manning present. Or something like that. It’s just amazing how much they seem like one another — smart, cerebral passers with flat affects who grew up watching their fathers deal with […]

La Canfora: Irsay ‘taking back his franchise’

Colts owner Jim Irsay sent shock waves throughout the NFL last week when he fired vice chairman Bill Polian and general manager Chris Polian. It was a move that NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora hears was about Irsay taking control of his franchise.
