Kurt Warner threw the slant, Eagles CB Asante Samuel wasn’t in the right place in coverage and got a “P.I.” (that’s what Willie calls pass interference). On the next play, Warner found WR Larry Fitzgerald on the other side of the end zone for a touchdown.

Of the many great matchups in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, the one that stands out is this: Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald vs. Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel.

CB Asante Samuel, who had an interception that set up the Eagles’ first-half touchdown — the only touchdown to that point — had to be administered an IV to replenish fluids at the start of the third quarter. He returned to the Eagles’ sideline after the Giants kicked a field goal early in the third quarter.

Few defensive players know Giants QB Eli Manning any better than Eagles CB Asante Samuel.

When Samuel faces Manning today, it will be the fifth time in the past 379 days that the two have squared off. That’s five times in their past 22 games.

Cornerback Asante Samuel set an NFL playoff career record with his fourth interception return for a touchdown, giving the Eagles a 16-7 lead over the Vikings with less than seven minutes left in the second quarter.

The Eagles held out CB Asante Samuel for the third consecutive day on Thursday due to a neck injury, and listed him as doubtful for Thursday’s game against the Cardinals.

The Bears lost CB Nathan Vasher and TE Desmond Clark to injuries during the second half of Sunday’s win over the Rams.
