Over the course of the NFL’s 45-year partnership with the USO, more than 200 active and former players and coaches have traveled to more than 20 countries.

Draft pick ramblings

The real pressure point of the first round is coming in the second quarter, with picks 8 through 12 all unsigned to this point. That span includes the player who has been absent from his camp the longest thus far — defensive end Aaron Maybin has missed the Bills’ first week of practice. It also includes a wide receiver who many believed would go in the top five (Michael Crabtree of the 49ers) and the first running back selected in the draft (Knowshon Moreno of the Broncos).

The Bills become the first NFL team to take the field for camp, doing so Saturday morning, but it will be virtually impossible to have all of their top remain picks signed by then.

Mack in focus at California’s pro day

Thirty teams had a total of 50 representatives at California’s pro day and there were six offensive line coaches on hand. Those assistants showed up to watch center Alex Mack (6-foot-4 1/4, 307 pounds).

No drills for Cal center Mack

California center Alex Mack said he sprained his ankle while preparing for the NFL Scouting Combine, and that will cause him to skip the drills in Indianapolis.
