Playbook: New view for evaluating QBs

While watching film with Joe Theismann this week, he wondered what Aaron Rodgers’ completion percentage would be if you took dropped passes out the equation. Drops, throwaways, and spikes are all incompletions that a QB is usually not responsible for. What would happen if we took these out of the equation? The result was what we call a “True QBR” rating.

Fantasy Faux Pas Monday: Kevin Smith strikes back

It’s no surprise that Kevin Smith headlines this week’s Fantasy Faux Pas, but as always, there’s plenty more.

Fantasy Feedback: Week 11

With Reggie Bush, Michael Bush and Chris Ogbonnaya having good days, running back controversies could be brewing in a few different NFL locker rooms. That and more in the Week 11 fantasy feedback blog.

Monday Nightmare: A-Rod for anxiety

There’s going to be a long conversation during the offseason about whether Aaron Rodgers deserves to be the No. 1 pick in fantasy drafts. But we will save that for another day. This is what we can say about him right now: Nobody offers more hope or causes for discomfort for fantasy owners than Rodgers playing on Monday night.

Data Points: Updating the Marino chase

We’re halfway through the season and the usual suspects are still on pace to shatter Dan Marino‘s single-season passing record. Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers all are in position to break the mark of 5,084 yards.

First and 10: Not for the faint of heart

If you missed the New York Giants’ Super Bowl flashback against the New England Patriots, or Sunday night’s stirring final drive by the Baltimore Ravens against the Pittsburgh Steelers, NFL Network’s got you covered with a special edition of “NFL Replay” Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.

Data Points: Brees takes lead in record chase

Last week, we mentioned that Tom Brady would have to have an absolutely abysmal game in Pittsburgh to drop off the pace to break Dan Marino‘s record for most passing yards in a season. Well, he’s still on pace to shatter that mark of 5,084, but Brady’s bad day actually pushed him down to third on the list of candidates to set the new mark.

Data Points: Still three for the show

There’s no change in our weekly update of the quarterbacks on pace to break Dan Marino‘s single-season passing yardage record. But here’s a little extra food for thought: If Patriots QB Tom Brady is held to 62 yards passing this week at Pittsburgh, he will still be on pace to break Marino’s mark of 5,084 yards.

Data Points: And then there were three

Since neither starting QB in the Monday night game has any chance of being mistaken for Dan Fouts, we’ll go ahead and update our weekly look at who’s on pace to break Dan Marino‘s single-season passing record right now. As we’ve noted, Marino set the mark of 5,084 yards back in 1984. As many as six passers were on pace to top that number just a couple of weeks ago. As defenses around the league have figured things out, that total is down to three:

For Packers, it’s all about a comfy pair of pants

When the Green Bay Packers decided to sport a throwback look that tossed it all the way back to 1929 — back when teams wore leather helmets and league uniform standards were much different than in today’s game — obviously, there were skeptics.

Data Points: These QBs take a consistent beating

When the Bears host the Vikings on Sunday night, Jay Cutler won’t be the only quarterback twitching. If it seems as if Cutler is sacked more consistently than any other QB in the league, you’re right. The Bears passer has been taken down at least once in 27 straight games, the longest active streak in the league. But Donovan McNabb isn’t far behind, having been sacked in 20 straight games.

Data Points: Five still on pace for Marino’s mark

Even Dan Marino admits that it’s only a matter of time before someone breaks his 27-year-old single-season passing record of 5,084 yards. And as we take our weekly look at the numbers, it shows that five QBs are still on pace to set a new record.
