There were representatives from 12 NFL teams at Northern Arizona’s pro day Wednesday to watch 13 players work out, and two of the players caught my eye. Zach Bauman, RB: Bauman measured 5-foot-7 1/4, 194 pounds, and recorded 40 times of 4.50 and 4.57. He had a 34-inch vertical jump, and a 9-foot broad jump. He also posted times of 4.12 in the short shuttle and 6.92 in the 3-cone drill, and threw the bar up 13 times in the bench press. Bauman was a very productive four-year starter at Northern Arizona who rushed for 1,182 yards and eight touchdowns last season. His only negative is that he’s not that tall, but I think he’s a very good player, and he […]

In today’s Three and Out: The Saints could be clearing out room in their backfield while the Jaguars are filling in slots in theirs.
Representatives from 18 NFL teams were on hand to watch five players work out at Illinois’ pro day, which was held indoors on FieldTurf. Jonathan Brown, OLB (6-foot 5/8, 234 pounds) — Brown — who was at the NFL Scouting Combine — ran the 40-yard dash in 4.87 and 4.85 seconds. He had a 31 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-3 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.59 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.31 seconds. He also recorded 18 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Brown is a likely seventh-round draft choice or free-agent pickup following the 2014 NFL Draft. Ryan Lankford, WR (5-11 1/2, 163) — Langford ran the 40 in 4.39 and 4.41 […]
Representatives from 25 NFL teams — including the entire Arizona Cardinals coaching staff — were on hand to see 15 players from Arizona work out outdoors in perfect 80-degree weather. Ka’Deem Carey, RB (5-foot-9 1/4, 209 pounds) — Carey ran the 40-yard dash in 4.68 and 4.69 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-5 broad jump. He also had 19 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Carey did field drills, too. However, he worked out with the wide receivers rather than doing running back drills, so his workout was good but scouts couldn’t see him work out of the backfield. Marquis Flowers, OLB (6-2 5/8, 231) — Flowers ran the 40 twice in 4.50 seconds. […]
Taylor Martinez played quarterback at Nebraska — starting 43 games at the position during four seasons with the Cornhuskers — but might be a man without a position as an NFL draft hopeful. Martinez (6-foot 1/4, 201 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 and 4.6 seconds. He had a 39-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-9 broad jump. He had a 20-yard short shuttle time of 4.03 seconds and did the three-cone drill in 6.85 seconds. All of those numbers with the exception of the three-cone would have either been the best among quarterbacks or matched the best among quarterbacks at the NFL Scouting Combine. Martinez worked out as a quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back at Nebraska’s pro day. Some […]
A total of 14 NFL teams — including offensive line coaches from the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles — were on hand for Furman’s pro day to watch five Paladins players work out on FieldTurf outdoors in the cold. The player of interest was offensive tackle Dakota Dozier, who was at the NFL Scouting Combine. He stood on his numbers from the event, which were really good. Dozier just did position drills at the pro day, and Dozier’s performance has him positioned to be a second-day pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Dozier’s draft stock has risen tremendously since early in the 2013 season and continued through a very good performance at the East-West Shrine Game.
In today’s Three and Out: The Houston Texans and Detroit Lions are filling out their respective shopping lists; the Eagles are determining who will fill their slot WR role.
A total of 11 players worked out in front of representatives from 10 NFL teams — including the running backs coaches from the Philadelphia Eagles (Duce Staley) and New York Jets (Anthony Lynn) — at Central Michigan’s pro day Wednesday. The workout was conducted indoors on FieldTurf. The player that the NFL running backs coaches were on hand to see work out was Zurlon Tipton, a 5-foot-11 3/4, 223-pound back who was on the 2013 Maxwell and Doak Walker Award watch lists. However, a broken ankle suffered in the season opener derailed those award hopes, and Tipton missed seven games. At Central Michigan’s pro day, Tipton ran the 40-yard dash in 4.70 and 4.73 seconds. He had a 32-inch vertical […]
Linebacker Chris Borland and wide receiver Jared Abbrederis aren’t among the prospects projected to be selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, but their intrigue as NFL prospects in the buildup to the draft continued at Wisconsin’s pro day Wednesday. A total of 20 NFL teams gathered in Madison, Wis. to see 10 Badgers prospects work out indoors on FieldTurf. A defensive backs coach from the Philadelphia Eagles and a linebackers coach from the Baltimore Ravens were on hand for the workout. Borland, LB (247 pounds) — Borland ran the 40-yard dash in 4.84 and 4.87 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-8 broad jump. He moved really well in the positional drills, a […]
Offensive tackle Jake Matthews was the only top prospect to work out at Texas A&M’s pro day on Wednesday. Two other projected first-round picks — quarterback Johnny Manziel and wide receiver Mike Evans — did not participate in the workout (Manziel has a personal pro day scheduled for March 27, and Evans is expected to be present for that workout). Matthews was worked out by St. Louis Rams offensive line coach Paul Boudreau at the pro day that was attended by 23 NFL teams, including the general managers from the Buffalo Bills (Doug Whaley) and Pittsburgh Steelers (Kevin Colbert). Matthews stood on his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine, but continued on a theme set at the combine by looking […]
Representatives from 30 NFL teams — including offensive line coaches from the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles — were gathered at Mississippi State’s pro day, which was held indoors on FieldTurf. Of the nine MSU players — plus one from Belhaven — the most notable was guard Gabe Jackson. Jackson — who was at the NFL Scouting Combine — only weighed in at the pro day (339 pounds), ran a three-cone drill (7.94 seconds) and then went through the positional drills. Jackson is a very solid football player, and his workout keeps him in the conversation as a possible first-round draft pick. But he seems more likely to be selected in the second round. Here are some other notables from […]
In today’s Three and Out: Montee Ball appears ready to take the reins of the Broncos running game.
Offensive tackle Greg Robinson and defensive end Dee Ford were the top attractions when Auburn held its pro day Tuesday. Representatives from all 32 NFL teams were in attendance to see 15 Auburn players work out plus one player from West Liberty. Robinson (6-foot-5 1/8, 327 pounds) stood on all his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. At the pro day, his arms were measured at 34 3/8 inches and his hands measured 10 1/8 inches. St. Louis Rams offensive line coach Paul Boudreau worked out Robinson, who looked good in the field drills and appears destined to be a top-five pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Ford (6-2 1/8, 244) was unable to work out at the combine after […]
One team was represented — the Philadelphia Eagles — when Slippery Rock held its pro day on March 4. Of the 10 Slippery Rock athletes to work out, two were notable: James McCombie, punter (5-foot-10 1/2, 181 pounds) — McCombie punted outdoors in cold weather (Slippery Rock is located in Western Pennsylvania). He had a 47.2-yard average on those punts and an average hang time of 4.17 seconds. John Schademan, WR (5-11, 188) — Schademan ran the 40-yard dash in 4.53 and 4.49 seconds. He had a 38-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-11 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.35 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.15 seconds. He looked good catching the ball, and is a possible […]
Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo drew most of the attention at Northwestern’s pro day, but I was also impressed by Northwestern receiver Rashad Lawrence‘s workout. Lawrence (6-0 7/8, 196 pounds), who did not participate at the combine, looked really good catching passes and was impressive in his drills. His times in the 40-yard dash were 4.50 and 4.53. He posted a vertical leap of 39 inches and a broad jump of 10 feet, 7 inches. He completed the short shuttle in 4.04 seconds and the 3-cone drill in 6.83. It was a strong workout, and I think he has a chance to be a sixth- or seventh-round pick in a draft that’s very deep on receivers. There were representatives from 29 […]
