Houston’s D.J. Hayden completes workout

Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden worked out for 15 teams Monday, completing the positional drills that a hamstring issue prevented him from finishing at his pro day last month.

Rex Ryan was part of a New York Jets contingent that also included the team’s defensive backs coach. Ed Donatell, the secondary coach for the San Francisco 49ers, also was in attendance, along with defensive backs coaches from the Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens and New Orleans Saints. Hayden worked out for about 45 minutes.

In a story on NFL.com, Andrea Kremer details the long odds Hayden faced in his attempt to come back from a life-threatening injury.

Will Luck have better rookie year than RG3?

With the 2012 NFL Draft now a thing of the past, it’s time for the football world to look to the future, when the games will actually be played. How will the highly touted rookies perform when they stop being prospects and start being rookies?

Two of the most closely watched players are undoubtedly going to be Colts QB Andrew Luck and Redskins QB Robert Griffin III, who were the first and second overall picks, respectively. While NFL Network analyst Tom Waddle acknowledged that Luck will likely have the better overall career, he thought RG3 will have the superior debut season, because he’s entering a better situation than Luck. Fellow analyst Matt Millen, however, disagreed.

“I just think that Andrew Luck is just so unique,” Millen said on NFL Network. “You’ve not seen a guy like this come out in such a long time, where he understands everything at the line of scrimmage. He’s so far ahead already.”

Waddle and Millen both pegged Cardinals WR Michael Floyd to have more success than Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon, given the overall talent discrepancy between the two teams, but were split on Panthers LB Luke Kuechly and Patriots LB Dont’a Hightower.

Waddle compared Kuechly to “a little bit smaller version of (Bears LB) Brian Urlacher,” while Millen foresaw Hightower becoming a versatile presence in New England.

“What he can do with his hand in the dirt and finding the football is special,” Millen said.

Georgia tackle Cordy Glenn won’t be at second round of draft

Georgia tackle Cordy Glenn, who was one of six players left in the 2012 NFL Draft Green Room at the end Thursday night, will not be a Radio City Music Hall during the second round of the draft on Friday night.

Glenn is flying back to Atlanta and will not be in New York, according to a league source.

Justin Blackmon doesn’t feel pressure of No. 1 receiver

The Jacksonville Jaguars traded up to select Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon with the fifth pick in the NFL draft, but the rookie told NFL Network Friday he doesn’t feel pressure to come in and be the No. 1 receiver for quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

“I wouldn’t say its pressure,” Blackmon said. “I think it’s just going in and doing what I’ve been doing and that’s playing football staying focused and working hard at all times.”

Fan reaction mixed over Jets’ first-round pick

With the 16th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Jets selected North Carolina DE Quinton Coples, and the reaction was mixed from some 3,500 Jets fans on hand at MetLife Stadium. While some cheered, others booed, with hopes of Melvin Ingram heading to New York shattered. It’s been chaos and excitement surrounding the draft, for all but one, who says his focus is elsewhere.

After signing autographs and ingratiating himself with a new set of fans, former Oakland Raider and newest Jets receiver Chaz Schilens said, “I’m not thinking about the draft; this is an opportunity to bring my slightly more aggressive style of play to New York. Getting to the playoffs is the goal.”

After logging plenty of hours of catch already with his new quarterbacks, Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow, Schilens said the two compliment each other. He continued, “Tim’s a really good dude. Mark’s the guy and Tim’s learning the system, like I am. They aren’t rivals, we’re all working hard, every day.”

The Jets are incredibly thin behind Santonio Holmes at wideout. Jeremy Kerley is a slot receiver only, and free agent Plaxico Burress isn’t likely to come back. At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Schilens — who had 72 receptions for 902 yards in four seasons with Oakland — is ready to make an impact, with either quarterback.

Luck is unfazed by prospect of replacing a legend

NFL Network reporter Melissa Stark caught up with Stanford QB Andrew Luck on the 2012 NFL Draft red carpet at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

And while everybody knows Luck will be the No. 1 overall selection of the Indianapolis Colts, the new Indy QB isn’t overwhelmed by the prospect of replacing Peyton Manning.

“How do you really replace a legend like Peyton,” Luck said. “You go in there and do the best you can. Those are huge shoes to fill … (but) there’s no reason not to have high expectations for yourself and the team.”

Jerry Jones wants to help Tony Romo in draft

With the No. 14 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has a constant reminder that his team finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs last season. And he’s not happy about it.

But Jones said he was eager to add talent that he hoped would give his team the lift it needs.

“Today is a reminder of how much we can improve,” Jones said on NFL Network’s pre-draft show. “While we have (Cowboys quarterback Tony) Romo, we’re going to do the things on this team to make it Romo-friendly. We think that’s the key. We could be looking at protection for him. All of this comes to mind.”

Jones also highlighted the Cowboys’ need to add defensive backs.

“We all want to put pressure on the offense,” Jones said. “But that pressure most of the time manifests itself on making plays in the secondary We haven’t been able to do that in the past two or three years. We have to address that. Tonight might give us the chance to do it.”

NFL, NFLPA have agreed on terms of rookie salary pool

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have come to a basic agreement on the terms of the rookie salary pool, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The agreement clears the way for the Indianapolis Colts to negotiate a deal with Andrew Luck.
