One might assume that the NFL Scouting Combine would amount to something of a reunion for the Polians, the first family of NFL administrators. Since the combine began Wednesday, however, the closest Dennis has come to his father was during a chance encounter when they almost literally bumped into each other as Bill emerged from a Thursday meeting with the NFL Management Council.

An NFL spokesman told me that the league issued a combine-record 715 credentials, beating the previous mark of 628, set last year. Extra tables and chairs had to be added to accommodate the heavier influx of writers and broadcasters seeking to interview some of the nation’s top college prospects invited to participate in drills from now through Tuesday, as well as NFL coaches and executives.

Vic Carucci bumped into Jim Kelly at the Buffalo airport this morning on his way to Indianapolis, and within seconds of exchanging pleasantries, they were discussing what the Bills might do with the third overall pick of the draft.

Despite claims to the contrary by the NFL Players Association, NFL executive vice president and general counsel Jeff Pash insisted that Monday’s unanimous Supreme Court ruling against the league in its case against American Needle has no impact on collective bargaining agreement negotiations.
