Linebacker Chris Borland and wide receiver Jared Abbrederis aren’t among the prospects projected to be selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, but their intrigue as NFL prospects in the buildup to the draft continued at Wisconsin’s pro day Wednesday. A total of 20 NFL teams gathered in Madison, Wis. to see 10 Badgers prospects work out indoors on FieldTurf. A defensive backs coach from the Philadelphia Eagles and a linebackers coach from the Baltimore Ravens were on hand for the workout. Borland, LB (247 pounds) — Borland ran the 40-yard dash in 4.84 and 4.87 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-8 broad jump. He moved really well in the positional drills, a […]
Offensive tackle Jake Matthews was the only top prospect to work out at Texas A&M’s pro day on Wednesday. Two other projected first-round picks — quarterback Johnny Manziel and wide receiver Mike Evans — did not participate in the workout (Manziel has a personal pro day scheduled for March 27, and Evans is expected to be present for that workout). Matthews was worked out by St. Louis Rams offensive line coach Paul Boudreau at the pro day that was attended by 23 NFL teams, including the general managers from the Buffalo Bills (Doug Whaley) and Pittsburgh Steelers (Kevin Colbert). Matthews stood on his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine, but continued on a theme set at the combine by looking […]
Representatives from 30 NFL teams — including offensive line coaches from the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles — were gathered at Mississippi State’s pro day, which was held indoors on FieldTurf. Of the nine MSU players — plus one from Belhaven — the most notable was guard Gabe Jackson. Jackson — who was at the NFL Scouting Combine — only weighed in at the pro day (339 pounds), ran a three-cone drill (7.94 seconds) and then went through the positional drills. Jackson is a very solid football player, and his workout keeps him in the conversation as a possible first-round draft pick. But he seems more likely to be selected in the second round. Here are some other notables from […]
Offensive tackle Greg Robinson and defensive end Dee Ford were the top attractions when Auburn held its pro day Tuesday. Representatives from all 32 NFL teams were in attendance to see 15 Auburn players work out plus one player from West Liberty. Robinson (6-foot-5 1/8, 327 pounds) stood on all his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. At the pro day, his arms were measured at 34 3/8 inches and his hands measured 10 1/8 inches. St. Louis Rams offensive line coach Paul Boudreau worked out Robinson, who looked good in the field drills and appears destined to be a top-five pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Ford (6-2 1/8, 244) was unable to work out at the combine after […]
One team was represented — the Philadelphia Eagles — when Slippery Rock held its pro day on March 4. Of the 10 Slippery Rock athletes to work out, two were notable: James McCombie, punter (5-foot-10 1/2, 181 pounds) — McCombie punted outdoors in cold weather (Slippery Rock is located in Western Pennsylvania). He had a 47.2-yard average on those punts and an average hang time of 4.17 seconds. John Schademan, WR (5-11, 188) — Schademan ran the 40-yard dash in 4.53 and 4.49 seconds. He had a 38-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-11 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.35 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.15 seconds. He looked good catching the ball, and is a possible […]
Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo drew most of the attention at Northwestern’s pro day, but I was also impressed by Northwestern receiver Rashad Lawrence‘s workout. Lawrence (6-0 7/8, 196 pounds), who did not participate at the combine, looked really good catching passes and was impressive in his drills. His times in the 40-yard dash were 4.50 and 4.53. He posted a vertical leap of 39 inches and a broad jump of 10 feet, 7 inches. He completed the short shuttle in 4.04 seconds and the 3-cone drill in 6.83. It was a strong workout, and I think he has a chance to be a sixth- or seventh-round pick in a draft that’s very deep on receivers. There were representatives from 29 […]
Representatives from 14 NFL teams — including the defensive backs coach from the Philadelphia Eagles — gathered at Liberty’s pro day to see 11 players work out. The timing was held indoors and took place on a track, which is a faster running surface than FieldTurf. The on-field workouts, however, were held outdoors since the school’s facility wasn’t big enough for field drills and it was very cold. The notable prospect to participate in the pro day was Walt Aikens, a cornerback who was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. Aikens (6-foot-0 5/8, 203 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 and 4.46 seconds. He did a 35-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-10 broad jump. He had a 4.28-second […]
Eastern Illinois’ Jimmy Garoppolo worked out at Northwestern’s pro day on Tuesday, and the NFL figures on hand for the workout show just how much interest the small-school quarterback has from teams. Prior to Garoppolo going through pro day drills, San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien worked out the quarterback but did not stick around for the actual pro day workout. Also on hand were the quarterbacks coaches for the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans. Garoppolo completed 29 of 39 passes at the pro day, and executed the level of workout that was expected of him. However, he likely didn’t move the needle on his draft stock one way or the other.
Representatives from 23 NFL teams gathered Tuesday at Purdue’s pro day, which was held indoors on FieldTurf. One Boilermaker prospect participated at the NFL Scouting Combine — cornerback Ricardo Allen — but there are some others who could grab the attention of teams. Allen (5-foot-9 1/8, 186 pounds) was at the combine, but went through drills again at Purdue’s pro day. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.49 and 4.46 seconds. He had a 37-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot broad jump. He ran the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.10 seconds and did the three-cone drill in 6.90 seconds. Allen — a 2013 second-team All-Big Ten pick by the media and an honorable mention selection by the coaches — put […]
Khalil Mack‘s emphatic march toward a top-10 selection in the 2014 NFL Draft continues to gain steam. At Buffalo’s pro day on Tuesday, the outside linebacker put forth a tremendous workout, which was held indoors at the Buffalo Bills’ facility. Representatives from 32 NFL teams attended the pro day, and Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine and Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie were among the notable attendees. Mack, who weighed in at 252 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.55 seconds (he only ran the 40 once), which topped the 4.65 official time that he ran at the NFL Scouting Combine. He worked out both in space and with his hand in the ground, and blew people away with his […]
Southern Arkansas hosted a pro day that was attended by prospects from six different schools and held at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark. on Monday. A total of 22 players participated at the pro day, which was attended by representatives from five NFL teams. Keaton Stigger (5-foot-11 1/4, 227 pounds), a linebacker from Henderson State, ran a 4.65 40-yard dash. Stigger, a D2Football.com second-team All-American selection and a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award, figures to be a priority free-agent possibility following the 2014 NFL Draft. Daniel Riley (6-2 7/8, 256), a defensive end from Harding, ran the 40 twice and did so in 4.7 seconds each time. Riley figures to be a priority free-agent possibility following the 2014 […]
There were 12 NFL teams represented at Duquesne’s pro day on March 3, which was indoors on a hard-surface track where five Duquesne players and 10 others players from area small colleges worked out in shorts. Dorian Bell, OLB (5-foot-11, 228 pounds) — Bell ran the 40-yard dash in 4.73 and 4.66 seconds. Duquesne didn’t have a place for prospects to do the shuttle runs or three-cone drill, so Bell will drive to Ohio State on Friday to perform those drills.
Scouts from five NFL teams, as well as a coach from one — Philadelphia Eagles wide receivers coach Bob Bicknell — watched 18 players work out at Ole Miss’ pro day Monday. The workouts took place indoors and on field turf. Donte Moncrief, who participated at the NFL Scouting combine, was among the 18 players who worked out, but three others looked like they were good enough to bring to camp as free agents. Donte Moncrief, WR: Moncrief was weighed and measured (6-foot-2 3/8, 219 pounds) and did position drills only. Scouts said that he looked very, very impressive. Jeff Scott, RB: Scott measured in at 5-6, 165 pounds, and posted times of 4.49 and 4.47 in the 40-yard dash. […]
Representatives from 20 NFL teams — including the entire coaching staff for the Minnesota Vikings — were on hand for Minnesota’s pro day on March 3 to see 25 players work out indoors on FieldTurf. Ra’Shede Hageman, DT (6-foot-6, 311 pounds) — stood on his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine and only went through position drills. Brock Vereen, FS (6-0, 199) — Vereen was at the combine, stood on his numbers from that event and only did position drills at Minnesota’s pro day. Aaron Hill, LB (6-0 5/8, 231) — Hill ran the 40-yard dash in 4.64 and 4.69 seconds. He had a 32-inch vertical jump and a 9-5 broad jump. He posted times of 4.30 seconds in the […]
Representatives from 30 NFL teams — including new Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien, as well as Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur — gathered at Pittsburgh’s pro day on March 3, where 10 players worked out indoors on FieldTurf. Fast-rising 2014 NFL Draft prospect Aaron Donald (6-foot-1, 287 pounds) stood on his impressive numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine, where he ran a 4.68-second 40-yard dash, had 35 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, registered a 32-inch vertical jump and 116-inch broad jump, and drew rave reviews for his performance. Donald only went through field drills and looked very good, showing fluid movement and substantiating the performance he displayed at the combine. There were […]
