Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly and San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh were among those from NFL teams on hand for Virginia Tech’s pro day Wednesday.
The event was held indoors and run on a tartan surface, which is a little faster than the FieldTurf featured inside most indoor facilities.
Antone Exum, CB (5-foot-11 3/8, 219 pounds) — Exum ran the 40-yard dash in 4.53 and 4.55 seconds. He had a 33 1/2-inch vertical jump and 9-foot-11 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.18 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.01 seconds. Exum is a well-built individual, and showed good fluidity in pass coverage and also an ability to track the ball well. Exum was a highly regarded player two years ago, but suffered a knee injury playing basketball in January of 2013. Exum came back to play in the 2013 season, but only played in three games and did not play at the same level as the previous season.
Kyle Fuller, CB (5-11 1/4, 193) — Fuller stood on his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. He had a very good workout, dropping back well and showing fluid/loose hips in pass coverage. Fuller could be selected late in the first round or early in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
James Gayle, DE (6-4 259) — Gayle ran the 40 in 4.60 and 4.62 seconds. He had a 34-inch vertical jump and 4.49-second short shuttle time. He’s a little bit of a straight-line runner. He will have to play defensive end in the NFL, since he doesn’t look like a guy who can play in space as an outside linebacker.
Logan Thomas, QB (6-6, 253) — Thomas has huge 10 5/8-inch hands. He looked good in the pro day workout, throwing with very good zip on the ball and with accuracy. He had one rollout to the left and one rollout to the right in which he wasn’t accurate on. He has a strong arm and is athletic. His inconsistency is a concern; he might hit 10 passes in a row, and then he might miss on 10 in a row. If somebody can correct his accuracy problem, he will be a very good football player.
Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer and his staff were great hosts for the pro day, and the scouts on hand got excellent cooperation from the program.
