AJ McCarron has A-plus workout at Alabama’s pro day

Representatives from all 32 NFL teams — including the head coaches of the Cincinnati Bengals (Marvin Lewis), Minnesota Vikings (Mike Zimmer) and New Orleans Saints (Sean Payton); general managers from the New York Giants (Jerry Reese), Vikings (Rick Spielman) and Saints (Mickey Loomis); as well as numerous coordinators and assistant/position coaches — were present at Alabama’s pro day on Wednesday.

A total of eight players worked out indoors on FieldTurf.

AJ McCarron, QB (6-foot-3 3/8, 222 pounds) — McCarron did an excellent job throwing the ball to receivers Kevin Norwood and Kenny Bell. There isn’t a consensus on McCarron, with some people really liking the two-time national title-winning quarterback and others not intrigued with the decorated collegiate passer. At Alabama’s pro day, he produced an A-plus workout and appeared a lot better than a mid- to late-round draft pick.

C.J. Mosley, LB (6-2 3/8, 234) — Mosley ran the 40-yard dash in 4.62 and 4.66 seconds (he didn’t run the 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine). He went through linebacker drills and had a quality workout that validates his expected first-round draft status.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, FS (6-1 3/8, 207) — Clinton-Dix stood on his numbers from the combine. Most everybody considers Clinton-Dix to be a good safety, and he’s likely to be selected as high as the middle of the first round. He had a good position workout to cap an impressive pro day, playing the ball well and showing good anticipation and quickness.

Kevin Norwood, WR (6-2 1/4, 199) — Norwood — who was at the combine — had an excellent workout, catching the ball very well from McCarron.

Kenny Bell, WR (6-0 1/4, 182) — Bell ran the 40 in 4.53 and 4.50 seconds. He had a 34-inch vertical jump and 9-foot-11 broad jump. He did the three-cone drill in 7.30 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.42 seconds.

Ed Stinson, DE (6-3 5/8, 288) — Stinson registered 27 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. He also did position drills at the pro day.

Deion Belue, CB (5-11, 176) — Belue — who was at the combine — ran the 40 in 4.51 and 4.50 seconds. He had a 36 1/8-inch vertical and 9-9 broad jump. He did the three-cone drill in 7.08 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.34 seconds. He also went through the position drills.

Jeoffrey Pagan, DE (6-4 3/8, 306) — Pagan — who was at the combine — didn’t do any drills.

Strong safety Vinnie Sunseri and offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio were not medically ready to go at the pro day and will work out on April 8.

All of the Alabama players are well-coached and work out well. All in all, it was an outstanding pro day. NFL personnel on hand were treated to breakfast and lunch, and the group was pleased with what they were able to do that day.
