Representatives from 28 NFL teams — including a running backs coach from the New York Jets and a special-teams coach from the Cincinnati Bengals — were on hand Wednesday for Oklahoma’s pro day, where 19 Sooners players worked out indoors on FieldTurf.
Jalen Saunders, WR (5-foot-8 7/8, 172 pounds) — Saunders ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds and then stood on the rest of his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. Saunders looked very quick and adept at catching punts. He has the look of a return specialist in the NFL.
Damien Williams, RB (5-11 1/4, 229) — Williams’ vertical jump was measured at 30 inches and then stood on the rest of his numbers from the combine (he was among the top performers among running backs in the 40, running a 4.45). Williams also did a position workout at the Sooners’ pro day.
Gabe Ikard, C (6-3 5/8, 301) — Ikard stood on his numbers from the combine, where he was among the top performers in his position group in the three-cone drill and 20-yard short shuttle. Ikard had a very good on-field workout, looking very athletic and quick. Ikard is a very promising prospect, but because of the nature of his position he is probably a mid-round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Austin Woods, long-snapper (6-4 1/2, 280) — Woods, a four-year long-snapper for the Sooners — looked good as a snapper at the pro day.
Jerry “Schmitty” Schmidt, the Sooners’ strength and conditioning coach, is really one of the best in his profession. He had Oklahoma’s pro day very organized.
