BGSU’s Alex Bayer getting close look from Buccaneers

Representatives from 22 NFL teams — including Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight ends coach Jon Embree — were on hand Monday for Bowling Green’s pro day, where 14 players worked out.

There were two athletes who had notable workouts:

Alex Bayer, TE (6-foot-3 7/8, 257 pounds) — Bayer ran the 40-yard dash in 4.77 and 4.78 seconds. He had a 31 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-3 broad jump. He ran the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.42 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.26 seconds. Bayer did 20 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Bayer — who has 9 3/4-inch hands — caught 37 passes for 593 yards and four touchdowns for the Falcons in 2013. He finished his career at Bowling Green with 10 touchdowns. Bayer has a visit scheduled with the Buccaneers for March 13.

Jerry “BooBoo” Gates, SS (5-11, 203) — Gates ran the 40 in 4.55 and 4.56 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 9-3 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.16 seconds and the three-cone in 7.05 seconds. He performed 27 strength lifts on the bench press. Gates was a first-team All-MAC safety in both 2012 and 2013, and also excelled as a kick returner (he set a new BGSU record for kickoff-return yards in 2011).

Both Bayer and Gates are potential late-round selections in the 2014 NFL Draft or priority free-agent pickups for NFL teams following the draft.
