New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and San Francisco 49ers GM Trent Baalke were among those in attendance for Clemson’s pro day Thursday. All 32 NFL teams were on hand to watch 14 players work out indoors on FieldTurf.
Here are some of the key workouts from day:
Tajh Boyd, QB: Boyd (6-0 3/4, 221 pounds) kept all of his numbers from the combine. He’s fallen off a little bit in the last few months, but he had a very strong pro day, looking good moving around and completing the ball. I think he improved his draft position and has a good chance to be a second-day pick.
Bashaud Breeland, CB: Breeland (5-11 3/8, 188 pounds) supposedly didn’t bring the right kind of shoes to this event and slipped three or four times during his coverage drills. He ran the 40 three times, clocking a 4.62, 4.58 and 4.57. He kept his jumps and short shuttle time from the combine, but ran the 3-cone drill in 7.03 seconds. He’s another second-day player in the draft.
Chandler Catanzaro, PK: Catanzaro (6-2 5/8, 208 pounds) didn’t do any of the position drills but did kick pretty well and looks like he’ll be a free-agent kicker.
Tyler Shatley, G: Shatley (6-3 1/4, 300 pounds) has 31 3/4-inch arms and is a very strong player, putting up 40 reps in the bench press. He ran the 40 in 5.17 and 5.21 seconds and had a 30 1/2-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 2-inch broad jump. He ran the short shuttle in 4.66 and the 3-cone drill in 7.95 seconds. He’s probably a third-day pick or a priority free agent.
Sammy Watkins, WR: Watkins (6-0 3/4, 214 pounds) kept all of his combine numbers and had an excellent workout. He’s an excellent route runner and has hands like a vacuum cleaner — he caught everything. Watkins solidified his position as a top-five player
Brandon Thomas, OT: Thomas (6-3 5/8, 318 pounds) impressed a lot of people with a good workout. He had an 8-foot, 3-inch broad jump, a 4.75 short shuttle and a 7.83 3-cone drill. He has very long arms, at 34 1/2 inches. I think he’ll be a third-day draft pick.
Martavis Bryant, WR: Bryant (6-4, 217 pounds) stood on all of his combine numbers. It’s hard to get attention when you’re a wide receiver on Sammy Watkins’ team, but people are quickly finding out about Bryant. He’s fast, has good hands, runs good routes and is a big target. He’s most likely a second-day pick and could go as high as the top 50 of the draft.
