Throughout the preseason, fantasy owners have been had a couple of questions about the Cincinnati Bengals backfield:
1. How will the team split carries between BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard?
2. Can Bernard eventually become the team’s three-down back?
As to the second question, Bernard has an answer.
“I want to be that guy.”
The rookie from North Carolina spoke with NFL Fantasy LIVE’s Matt “Money” Smith and former Eagles star Brian Westbrook about his role with the team this season and says he feels like he can do anything that head coach Marvin Lewis asks of him. So far, that has included some work on special teams as a punt and kick returner.
When it comes to rookies getting on the field, we endorse anything that could get them more touches. Bernard had plenty of upside in keeper and dynasty leagues because of his ability to line up in multiple spots and his value as a pass-catcher. If he also has the possibility to rack up yards (and points) as a return specialist, he’ll be that much more of a commodity — especially in leagues that reward owners for that statistic.
