Jaguars, Eagles make presence known at WVU pro day

West Virginia University had a whopping 28 teams in attendance for the school’s pro day. The Jacksonville Jaguars brought a large contingent, including new coach Gus Bradley, owner Shahid Khan and Khan’s son. The Philadelphia Eagles also had a large group in attendance, but Chip Kelly was absent. Head coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager Kevin Colbert attended for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as did Buffalo Bills GM Buddy Nix. Cleveland Browns scout Donovan Beidelschies did a very good job of working out the West Virginia lineman. In all, 16 players worked out for pro day, held indoors on FieldTurf on March 14.

Tavon Austin, WR (173 lbs) — Austin wasn’t measured and didn’t run any timed drills, but he excelled during the positional workouts. Austin displayed great quickness during the wide receiver drills. One of the NFL teams present had a special teams coach work Austin out as a kick returner.

Geno Smith, QB (217 lbs) — Smith did the weigh-in only for the pro day, opting not to participate in drills. A portion of his position workout was run by trainer, and former NFL QB, Chris Weinke. The Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals also held workouts with the quarterback.

Stedman Bailey, WR (198 lbs) — Bailey posted times of 4.62 and 4.66 running the 40-yard dash. A long strider for a wide receiver, Bailey looked good in the position workouts. He did have one drop on the day.

Joe Madsen, OL (301 lbs) — Madsen opted to keep his 40-yard dash times from the NFL Scouting Combine, but he did run some other drills. He posted a 27 inch vertical and 8-foot-10 broad jump. In the running drills, Madsen ran a 4.86 short shuttle and finished the three-cone shuttle in 7.58 seconds.

Josh Francis, OLB (5-11 3/4, 228) — Francis is a really good athlete that will find himself in demand in the latter stages of the draft or as a high-priority undrafted free agent. The linebacker clocked in at 4.77 and 4.72 seconds for the 40-yard dash. He measured a 10-foot-5 in the broad jump and pumped out 25 strength lifts. He’s the kind of athlete that will make a good special teams player.

Jeff Braun, OL (6-4, 309) — Braun posted times of 5.36 5.42 in the 40-yard dash. He did 29 strength lifts.

Joshua Jenkins, OL (6-2 7/8, 297) — Jenkins ran the 40-yard dash in 5.46 and 5.56 seconds. He also did 22 lifts during the strength drills.
