NFL combine recap: Manti Te’o, Leon Sandcastle and a Jennifer Lawrence-worthy tumble

The 2013 NFL Scouting Combine (or underwear Olympics as it’s also commonly known) has come to a close. Hundreds of NFL hopefuls descended on Lucas Oil Stadium over the last several days to try to run, jump and lift their way into the hearts of NFL coaches and scouts across the land. But what were the most entertaining stories circling the combine that deserve revisiting? That’s what we’re here for. So sit back, put your feet up, and relive the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine through a more comedic lens.

Run Rich Run

In the most anticipated event of the combine, Rich Eisen tied his personal best of 6.03-seconds in the 40-yard dash. What made the annual event even better was the outstanding amount of fan submissions we received. You can watch the best of the best here. Perhaps another year of working with Leon Sandcastle will help Rich crack that pesky 6-second barrier in 2014.

Shamarko Thomas pulls a Jennifer Lawrence

————————————————————————————————————————————–

Two days after Jennifer Lawrence tripped on her way to accept her Best Actress award, Syracuse safety Shamarko Thomas gave his own awards-worthy performance. He opened up with an unofficial 40-yard dash time of 4.38-seconds that likely caught the eye of most scouts. Unfortunately,  his elation was short lived when he ate synthetic turf immediately after the impressive run. Colts officials are investigating the appearance of what looks to be the same breed of 40-yard line monster that tripped Eric Decker in San Diego earlier this year to prevent future trouble.

Harbaugh is not impressed

————————————————————————————————————————————–

This could potentially be the most meme-inspiring moment of the entire combine. Highly scrutinized linebacker prospect Manti Te’o needed a good workout performance to solidify his first round status after this little-known story surfaced earlier in the year. Sadly, Te’o underwhelmed most of the powers-that-be with his workout, especially Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh as you can see in the video above.

Leon Sandcastle

Arguably the most intriguing prospect in the 2013 combine was Leon Sandcastle, even if he was just Deion Sanders in a bad afro wig. Nevertheless, it was an excellent campaign from NFL Network. The fact that players at the combine got in on the joke was even better than Sandcastle actually running the drills. Let’s hope next year’s combine proves to be just as entertaining, and perhaps we’ll see a new Leon Sandcastle-esque figure enter the spotlight.

Attempts at “fashion”

————————————————————————————————————————————–

Arians-Elway-Bray

In addition to the many combine hopefuls, Bruce Arians and John Elway sported interesting fashion trends in Indianapolis this weekend. The poor combine athletes were stuck wearing a mix of crazily colored and designed tops from Under Armour, that in the case of Tyler Bray weren’t flattering at all. Arians drew attention with his red paperboy hat (Kangol, Gatsby or Junior Soprano inspired? We’re not sure.) while Elway tried to remain hip by doing his best Grease lightning impression by donning a black leather jacket with red racing stripes.  For the most part, coaches and scouts kept it simple by wearing their team apparel. Kudos to Arians and Elway for at least attempting to raise the bar, but maybe next year they can ask their wives for a little bit of advice before hopping on the plane to Indianapolis.
