Shorts’ season over: After suffering his second concussion in the past four games, Cecil Shorts was placed on injured reserve. The Jaguars’ wide receiver was a surprise breakout player in his second season, catching 55 passes for 979 yards and nine touchdowns — all while upstaging highly-touted rookie Justin Blackmon. In the second half of the season, Blackmon has been better — even if Shorts remained the primary target — and this could be a final opportunity for the rookie to prove his worth. Both to his team and fantasy owners.
Giants not trusting Wilson: All signs pointed to David Wilson getting a lot of work last Sunday. Ahmad Bradshaw didn’t look completely healthy and was generally unproductive while the Giants were getting blown out by the Baltimore Ravens. Still, Wilson played just four snaps in the entire contest. One of those four plays resulted in a 14-yard touchdown run, but it underscores the lack of trust coach Tom Coughlin has in the rookie. After a fumble in the season opener, Wilson was relegated to the bench for a long stretch. Even after his return to the field, mistakes in pass protection and dropped passes have limited his playing time. His value for Week 17 was pretty low already. Now it’s about finding out if he can learn Big Blue’s offense well enough to earn more touches for next season.
Johnson battles sore ankle: It’s been a frustrating season for Chris Johnson, and reports that he’s battling a sore ankle isn’t the ending he was looking for. Apart from a 122-yard outburst in Week 14 (94 of which came on one run), Johnson hasn’t been all that productive recently, failing to reach even 60 rushing yards in three of his past four games. He does finish the season with a pretty favorable matchup against the Jaguars, but with nothing to play for, don’t expect Johnson to give a heroic effort on a bum ankle.
