NFL fantasy football: Seahawks’ high-flying defensive day

Sometime during the third quarter of the Seattle Seahawks’ 58-0 beatdown of the Arizona Cardinals, our Twitter timeline started filling up with questions about how Sunday’s defensive performance stacked up among some of the great fantasy defensive performances.

Well, we didn’t go back through the entire history of the NFL (if any of you out there have too much free time and would like to do that, I’ll extend a Laurel and Hardy handshake), but we did dip back into the archives going back to 2002. Believe it or not, we found one team that bested Seattle’s total from Week 14.

It was the Seattle Seahawks.

Back in Week 13 of the 2005 season, the ‘Hawks crushed the Philadelphia Eagles 42-0 on Monday Night Football. In the process, Seattle scored three defensive touchdowns — two by Andre Dyson — to go along with four sacks and six turnovers. By the time the night was over, Seattle’s defense has racked up 44 fantasy points. Not too shabby.

What does the rest of the top five look like? Keep reading…

Seattle Seahawks, Week 14, 2012 (41 fantasy points) — The Seahawks defense just couldn’t stop scoring fantasy points Sunday against the Cardinals, forcing eight turnovers against a pair of Arizona quarterbacks, notching three sacks and scoring a pair of touchdowns.

San Francisco 49ers, Week 4, 2009 (39 fantasy points) — The Niners’ defense led the way in a 35-0 whitewashing of the St. Louis Rams. San Francisco’s defense recorded three of the team’s touchdowns — including one on a 23-yard interception return by Patrick Willis. They made life miserable for Kyle Boller, sacking him five times while forcing three turnovers.

Chicago Bears, Week 10, 2011 (36 fantasy points) — The Bears didn’t get much from their offense that day, but they didn’t need it. Devin Hester returned a punt for a touchdown while Major Wright and Charles Tillman each took touchdowns to the house as part of a 37-13 victory. Chicago intercepted Matthew Stafford four times and scooped up two more fumbles in a contest that was all but decided midway through the third quarter.

Atlanta Falcons, Week 12, 2002 (36 fantasy points) — The Dirty Birds started the scoring with a pick six from Keion Carpenter and rolled to a 41-0 pasting of the Carolina Panthers from there. Atlanta grabbed six turnovers and lived in the Panthers’ backfield, racking up eight sacks.
