NFL fantasy football: Put your Kaepernick on?

It’s no surprise that Colin Kaepernick is the talk of the NFL on Tuesday. After all, when you carve up the league’s leading defense with 243 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns in your first-ever NFL start, you’re going to turn a few heads. But it begs the question … should you pick him up off the waiver wire?

Undoubtedly, Kaepernick looked fantastic on Monday night. But Alex Smith has been pretty good all season long, completing 70 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. Therein lies the rub. Smith isn’t a fantasy monster (he ranks just 24th among QBs in 2012) but the Niners are winning with him under center. Jim Harbaugh might not hate your fantasy team (a la, Bill Belichick and Mike Shanahan), but he’s probably not taking any great pains to make sure you succeed either. Harbaugh’s comments that he plans to “go with the hot hand” would suggest giving Kaepernick the start … until the coach adds that the team has two quarterbacks with hot hands.

The bottom line: if you have roster flexibility, Kaepernick is worth picking up, though you’ll have to keep a close eye on San Francisco’s injury reports this week. The rookie has been a part of the Niners offense this year, but it’s been a minor role. Unlike running backs, quarterbacks generally don’t rotate. That means picking the wrong 49ers QB Sunday could sink your fantasy week.
