Cam Newton Metric Week 2 – Comparing Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III

(Associated Press)

Each week, we’ll take a look at how Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III stack up against the 2011 breakout performance of Cam Newton.

Andrew Luck vs. Cam Newton

Andrew Luck led the Colts to a 23-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.  A solid performance on both sides of the ball helped Luck secure his first career win.

The Verdict: In the Colts home opener, Luck threw two touchdowns and passed for 224 yards. In every category except passing yards, Luck beats Cam Newton’s 2011 week 2 numbers against Green Bay.

The momentum from the Washington Redskins’ week 1 win couldn’t continue against the St. Louis Rams. Despite a rally in the fourth quarter, RG3 and team fell short of a comeback, losing 28-31. Josh Morgan’s foolish penalty did not help.

The Verdict: Compared to Cam Newton, Griffin pulls through on passer rating, but the other categories are not as dominating as last week.

Looking at rushing yards: RG3 had 11 rushes for 82 yards and 2 touchdowns. The only other Redskins quarterbacks to score two rushing touchdowns in a game are Mark Rypien and Norm Snead. Cam Newton rushed for 53 yards and scored 1 rushing touchdown in his 2011 week 2 game.

Next week RG3 and the Washington Redskins face the Cincinnati Bengals and the Jacksonville Jagurs visit the Indianapolis Colts.
