Dickerson: Two, three weeks for MJD to get in shape

If there is one former player who knows the effects of a protracted holdout it’s Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson.

A dual-threat running back, Dickerson missed 47 days in 1985 in a dispute with the Los Angeles Rams and later held out for 80 days as a member of the Indianapolis Colts in 1990.

With Maurice Jones-Drew ending his 38-day holdout Sunday, Dickerson said it will take time for the NFL’s leading rusher to get back in the swing of the season.

“You can’t get in shape just working out,” Dickerson told “NFL AM” on Monday morning. “Football shape is a different kind of shape. It will take a couple weeks.”

In his next breath, Dickerson provided us with evidence that seemingly contradicted his point.

“My first game I came back (in 1985) I played the Seattle Seahawks, I had like 150 yards, 3 touchdowns but my legs weren’t just there,” he said.

We checked the stats he spat out as if it happened yesterday, he didn’t misremember.

Fantasy football owners shouldn’t expect the same output from MJD.

“It will take him a few weeks to get back in football shape,” Dickerson said. “Maybe two or three weeks but after that, the big things is you can’t get hurt, that is really what it comes down to, not get hurt just try and stay healthy. A couple weeks he’ll be ready to go a full season again.”
