NFL fantasy football: Value … it’s all relative

I spend a pretty good chunk of the day going through the myriad tweets we get at the NFLFantasy Twitter account and I must say that plenty of you are pretty funny. Although I wouldn’t suggest quitting your day jobs.
More commonly, we get plenty of questions like this…
@nflfantasy Am I crazy for trading Brady and Doug Martin for Eli manning and Gronk#needhelp— Matt Winkfield (@Winkz21) August 27, 2012
Without seeing Matt’s entire roster, it’s hard to give a completely accurate evaluation of his mental stability. But it’s not completely crazy to think this is just a giveaway. We spend so much time here trying to determine draft value and roster value that all we’re missing is a skinny microphone and a Showcase Showdown. But that’s all determined on playing in a perfect world.
In case you haven’t noticed, your league is probably a long way from a fantasy football Utopia. That means your roster is probably stronger in some positions than in others. If Matt is already sitting on Aaron Hernandez or Tony Gonzalez, giving away a Top 3 quarterback for another tight end doesn’t make a lot of sense. But if he’s looking at a running back corps with the likes of Ray Rice and Jamaal Charles, sending Doug Martin away to fill in the holes is a wise move.
Just something to keep in mind when evaluating trades. Absolute player rankings and values are a good barometer to insure you’re not totally getting ripped off, but before you accept or decline the offer, remember that value sometimes is all relative.
