Eric Davis: Andrew Luck keeps Colts in playoff hunt

Only Andrew Luck could have been at the crux of a discussion that, by our estimation, produced a ground-breaking moment in sports morning show history.

Tuesday morning on “NFL AM” all three analysts agreed that the Indianapolis Colts’ signal-caller would have the best 2012 season of the starting rookie quarterbacks.

Former Pro Bowl cornerback Eric Davis went so far as to say Luck would have the former 2-14 Colts in the playoff hunt this year.

“I think the Colts will be a player in the wild card,” Davis said. “I really do believe this team will not be as bad as they were last year and he will be a major reason for it.”

The Miami Dolphins announced Monday that Ryan Tannehill will become the team’s 17th quarterback since Dan Marino retired, making him the fourth rookie quarterback to be named a starter this season, along with Luck, Robert Griffin III and Brandon Weeden.

“I don’t see anyone threatening this kid as the most successful of the rookie quarterbacks, even if Washington does make the playoffs,” Mark Kriegel chimed in, noting a widely held belief that the Redskins could have the best team of the four opting to start rookies.

“I have seen enough to understand that this guy is the goods, he’s going to have some difficult moments as he goes through the season, Colts will have some difficult times but we see him overcoming,” NFL Network and’s Steve Wyche said. “I think when you look at the other quarterbacks — Tannehill and Weeden — they are on franchises that aren’t going to win many games. But I do think RG3 is in a situation where he might win more ball games than Luck, but I’ve seen enough from Luck to think he is the real deal.”

Wyche and Davis both brought up an interesting side story to the rookie quarterback discussion, pointing out that if Seattle Seahawks rookie Russell Wilson, who has yet to face a first-string defense, wins the starting quarterback battle with Matt Flynn, he could be in the best situation to win this season.

“If Russell Wilson gets the job, with the defense he has, Russell Wilson actually could end up having the better year from a wins standpoint,” Davis said. “If he gets the job.”
