Stop me if you’ve heard this one … Chris Johnson is going to bounce back in a big way this year.
That’s been a popular refrain among many this year, including several members of our own NFL Fantasy LIVE crew. Bucky Brooks stopped by the show on Thursday to take a closer look at what’s separated fantasy football superhero CJ2K from the mere mortal known as Chris Johnson. The verdict? Last season’s holdout definitely hurt, but breakdowns along the offensive line were a bigger culprit in Johnson’s recent decline.
If you’ve watched more than five minutes of football, you’ll know that Bucky isn’t breaking any new ground here. Good run blocking up front usually leads to good running back production. But there has yet to be a fantasy football league that quantitatively measures the performance of offense linemen. Not to mention that (as my father once told me), people don’t ask how … they ask how many. Which is to say, you’re probably wondering less about how the Tennessee Titans are solving the problem and more about if the problem has been solved.
Well, the team added seven-time Pro Bowl lineman Steve Hutchinson to help anchor a veteran group up front. Heading into his 12th NFL season, Hutchinson has led the way for Shaun Alexander and Adrian Peterson during some of their most productive seasons. That’s no guarantee that Johnson returns to his previous form, but it is a solid reason for all of the optimism surrounding the speedster’s fantasy football prospects this year.
