Well, it didn’t take long for the first big fantasy football name to get injured.
San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews went down after one carry against the Green Bay Packers, and was later diagnosed with a broken clavicle that will keep him out of action four to six weeks. Does this injury mean you should drop Mathews on your rank lists. Yes, just don’t overreact. Despite durability issues, he still has plenty of value for fantasy owners.
In a best-case scenario, he’ll be back at some point in early September. Even if he’s out for the full six weeks, Mathews should return to the field around Week 3 or 4. Until then, Ronnie Brown needs to be added to the list of must-have handcuffs. The veteran will see more work while Mathews is sidelined and is now worth a late-round look in most leagues.
Consider Mathews a high-end No. 2 fantasy runner and worth a third- or fourth-round selection. He now comes in at No. 11 overall at his position, down from No. 4.
