Understanding why 49ers LB Aldon Smith apologized for getting stabbed…

It was an eventful day in Santa Clara for 49ers training camp yesterday, which is always the case when Randy Moss talks. You read some highlights here, and you can see more here. We’ll have a recap later today on what went down (hopefully) in Santa Clara. But Moss wasn’t the only notable person to speak. Second-year linebacker Aldon Smith, who burst onto the scene last year with 14 sacks, also met the media. It was the first time he’d done so since he got stabbed earlier in the summer. And, put that with an arrest for DUI even earlier than that, and it’s been a tough offseason. Aldon was 100 percent yesterday, projecting optimism: “I felt better than ever, I’m […]

Behold! An older, kinder, gentler Randy Moss for the 49ers …

Hellooooo from San Francisco. Or, actually, Santa Clara, Calif. Hey, only a 45-minute drive. Anyway, the San Francisco 49ers are about to practice, and Randy Moss will be on the field when they do. The 35-year-old formerly retired receiver spoke to the media today for about 10 minutes, and he was as colorful as always. That accent never gets old, and neither does what he says. But this time, to me, it felt different. He’s older and wiser, but maybe kinder and gentler? He was soulful, almost. He was asked about his milestones and said he didn’t care. Not really, anyway. “I just love to play football,” Moss said. “All that other stuff I’ll leave up to y’all. I’ve been […]

NFL fantasy football: Adrian Peterson on PUP list

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson might be placed on the PUP list, but fantasy football owners shouldn’t be too concerned.

My training camp report: The Panthers

We here at NFL Network and are getting around. Just check where I’ve been the last few days. To that end, we’re hitting 32 training camps and offering reports on each of them. These training camp reports, kinda like postcards, will all be the same format. A relaxed, kinda cool way to keep you informed on what’s going on in training camp. The first one I did came from the first place I was… even if I actually covered a pre-training camp workout at the Panthers facility. They move into Wofford College today. What did I see from the Panthers? Lots of optimism, and lots of reason to be optimistic. Check out my training camp report.

Recapping this trip: The New York City to San Francisco edition

Well, this was a pretty wild leg of my 2012 Training Camp experience. And we’re only getting warmed up. From Charlotte on Wednesday to New York City to cover the NFL’s Total Wellness initiative on Thursday to San Francisco for 49ers practice today at around 2:30 p.m. Pacific. Whew. Want a quick recap of how we got here? Here we go… — I’d never been to the league office in New York, and I came away really impressed. I can’t be alone in that. It’s all football. An obscenely and awesomely large TV (right) showing NFL Network, a beautiful Super Bowl ring display with every ring, even a nice NFL shield on the conference table. It was new and sparkling. I even […]

My story and some leftovers: The NFL announces its Total Wellness initiative

I spent the early part of Thursday in the NFL offices at 345 Park Avenue in New York, reporting on the league’s Total Wellness initiative. You saw a bunch of this on Twitter. The goal was to discuss the league’s plan to promote comprehensive health and assist anyone under its auspices who wants helps. There is now a new 24/7 confidential phone number, for instance, for players, former players, their families, staffers and whoever else to call and discuss their problems. This is its website with some testimonials. I get the sense the league isn’t done providing such resources. But today’s deal was for physical and mental health, family safety, and post-career living. This was my news story on the day’s […]

Recapping this road trip: The Charlotte edition

We’re whipping around the country for a few weeks, hitting a whole mess of training camps. Football has started, and man has it ever! We’ll try to do these trip recaps after each stop, but they’ll be a little shorter than usual… because we’re in-and-out of places. So… I’m in New York City this morning, which means I’ve left Charlotte. How was the visit to the Panthers? Here is my hit from Total Access yesterday. Some highlights… — It wasn’t really a training camp day yesterday, and that was the point. Training camp actually starts on Friday in Wofford College for the Panthers. Yesterday’s session was for injured players, quarterbacks, and younger players. A great chance for Cam Newton to […]
