It wasn’t a Super Bowl guarantee, but D’Brickashaw Ferguson should know by now that any prediction or vociferous proclamation by a New York Jet will be met with overreaction and, in many cases, admonishment.

On Tuesday’s edition of ““The Dave Dameshek Football Program”, Ferguson had the audacity to speak positively about his team.

“We’re going to do some nice things this year. The focus should be on what’s gonna happen this year, and what’s in our power to do,” he said. “We have greatness written all over us. It’s just a matter of time.”

And all we heard was “greatness.”

Steve Wyche and Mark Kriegel of “NFL AM” discussed Ferguson’s comments in their “Double Coverage” segment, and as expected, there was little agreement.

“Greatness?” Kriegel exclaimed. “I don’t see any evidence of that. Where have they gotten better? They were an 8-8 team last year and they are on the verge of greatness? Greatness? Who is their great, elite pass rusher? Aaron Maybin? Who?” (The only question Kriegel left out was “Practice?”)

Wyche, meanwhile, tried to channel Ferguson’s inner consciousness:

“I think what he is trying to say is if they didn’t make some of the mistakes that took place last year they could have competed for a playoff spot,” Wyche said. “Now greatness, I think that’s a little overstepping the boundaries.”

For the Jets to become great, it starts with Ferguson and the offensive line stepping up, Wyche said.

“There were tremendous problems across that offensive front and that trickled down on both sides of the ball,” he said. “First off, it affected Mark Sanchez — they did not ground nor pound like they used to.”

And from there, the conversation devolved, as it always does these days, into a Tim Tebow vs. Mark Sanchez discussion.
