Mathews in “way better shape”: In a recent interview with XTRA Sports 1360 in San Diego, Chargers running back Ryan Mathews said that he will enter training camp in “way better shape” than he was in 2011. The fantasy breakout candidate went on to state that he is “about to blow it away” in 2012, which is music to the ears of fantasy owners. A member of my “Fantasy man crush list,” Mathews is in a great position to find success. He will be a true featured back with Mike Tolbert now in Carolina, and his schedule is one of the more favorable among runners. He’s now worth as much as a first-round pick and won’t last long if he falls to Round 2.

No favorite in Bucs backfield: Rookie running back Doug Martin is considered by many to be the best fantasy runner in Tampa Bay, but coach Greg Schiano isn’t handing him the starting job. In fact, he told Pewter Report that he “doesn’t have any favorites” in the backfield competition. That sounds like coach speak to me, as the Bucs wouldn’t have used a first-round pick on Martin if he wasn’t going to figure prominently in the offense. With that said, the rookie is going to have to earn his keep in training camp. A potential fantasy sleeper, Martin is being drafted (on average) in Round 7 on NFL.com. Blount isn’t coming off the board until Round 14.

More trouble for Kenny Britt: NFL Network reporter Albert Breer tweeted a report from 104.5 FM in Nashville, stating that Titans wideout Kenny Britt was arrested for DUI. Britt, who is coming off multiple knee surgeries, is no stranger to off-the-field problems. In fact, this would make eight arrests since he entered the NFL in 2009. Furthermore, he might have already been subject to NFL discipline had some of his infractions not occurred during last year’s lockout. If this report is in fact true, there’s a good chance Britt will be suspended for part of the 2012 campaign. Obviously, his fantasy stock seems to be on the verge of taking a huge tumble while the stock of Nate Washington and rookie Kendall Wright will be on the rise. Stay tuned.
