Redskins QB Robert Griffin III and his family are ready for one of the NFL’s most intense fan bases

Robert Griffin III has prepared himself for the many parts of being a professional athlete. In fact, he seems ready for everything. Among the many topics we discussed during the Subway commercial shoot on Thursday, RG3 and I hit on the Washington Redskins fans.

Yup, he knows they are nuts (in a good way). He likes it. But is he ready for them?

The excitement from the fan base is definitely there,” Griffin told me. “We won’t be able to say we show up at FedEx Field and there were no fans there. And they’re gonna be excited. They won’t be out there booing or anything like that. They want to see us do well. So I think it’s up to us to decide if we want to be great or not.”

RG3 isn’t alone. His fiancee, Rebecca Liddicoat, is well-versed in what life will be like in the Washington DC area. They’ve spent plenty of time in Virginia where the practice facility is, and she’s had more than a glimpse of Redskins fans.

Right after the draft when we came out to his press conference at the stadium, there were a lot of fans, a lot more than I would’ve expected,” Liddicoat said. “They were so excited and happy to see him and that was kind of the first step. As far as going out places, he gets noticed here and there. There was one day that we went out, we were just walking around these stores and we turned to go back and that’s when it hit. We couldn’t walk. So, we kinda just got back to our car. But I think people are noticing and they are excited.

That kind of life is not for everyone. Sure, Rebecca was used to it at Baylor. But this is a different level. Her fiance will be extremely public.

It’s good,” she continued. “I’m glad they’re excited about the fact that he’s here, and it’s only natural because they’re ready for something like that, they’re ready for a chance. It’s nothing to be mad about. Sometimes you’re like, ‘Oh, we’d like to eat dinner,’ but it’s good. It’s all for the best.

Liddicoat has done her best to immerse herself in the franchise’s culture. She’s got some gear to show it.

I do have a couple hats,” Liddicoat said. “They gave us one at the draft. And also, they put together this bag of clothes for me and his family, so that was really nice of them. We got some stuff like that. I did get one of those Griffin III Knows shirts, the Washington ones, I admit to that. I’m excited. It’s a new team for me and a new team for us, so we’re getting to know everything about it. Should be good.”
