Just got off the phone with Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs, and I’m still laughing. The conversation was fun, with Briggs offering me some fashion advice right out of the gate. Considering he’s the NFL/New Era cap ambassador helping launch the new on-field product, he has some sway.
We’ll get to all that in a day or so. But today, I’m pumped about getting to ask the seven-time Pro Bowl player about my favorite Sound FX moment of the year. Yeah, you know the one.
At the 1:25 mark, Broncos QB Tim Tebow inexplicably exclaims, “What up, Lance Briggs??” Then he tells Briggs he’s been waiting to play against him his whole life. It was hilarious, both in its randomness and in its sincerity. Briggs has been an incredibly productive player, but you rarely hear about QBs who want to play against linebackers… or anyone.
Turns out, I wasn’t alone in freakin’ loving this. Briggs’ teammates did, too.
“Come on, man!” Briggs told me when I asked if he knew the clip. “I’ve never heard the end of it.”
I could hear Briggs starting to laugh on the phone — he’s got an infectious laugh. I started chuckling, too. So, am I not the only one who thought this was comedy?
“Trust me,” Briggs continued. “The moment it happened, I’ve been hearing about it from my teammates. Yeah. (laughs) About how close me and Tebow are. What’s the score to next week’s game going to be, because me and Tebow are so close? (Laughs).”
Briggs was intense during the game, which is no surprise. He had to see the moment later on NFL Network before he was able to fully appreciate it.
“But yeah, he’s a nice guy. He’s a nice guy,” Briggs said. “He was excited to be out there on the field, which is awesome. He’s a good-hearted guy. I don’t know how anyone can not like him.”
The question is still out there — why Briggs? I offered that maybe Tebow just liked the way he played…
“I assume that (Tebow is) just a competitor and loves to get on the field and play against some of the guys that he’s either heard from or is excited to play against, you know?” Briggs said. “I’m sure he feels the same way about Brian (Urlacher) and Julius Peppers and a group of us.”
Sure, maybe. But man, I’m glad Tebow singled out Briggs.
