Well, I’m back in Minnesota on a glorious June day. I can understand why people vacation here. Alas, the walk-through this morning was in the field house, so all the sun block I applied went to waste.
The big story here is that mercurial star Percy Harvin isn’t happy. Why? Who knows? But here is what he told reporters today following the walk-through, citing issues that “definitely” need to be resolved.
Well, defensive end Jared Allen also spoke to the media, and I’d say he wasn’t thrilled either. No, not for any contract reasons. But Allen was lamenting missing out on the single-season sack record last year, getting 22 to fall a half a sack short of Michael Strahan’s record.
Yeah, it weighs on him.
“Before you get that close, you’re not really sure if it’s attainable,” Allen said. “You think it is, because you always think if someone did it, I could do it. But being right there and actually leaving some stuff on the field — they took the one away in Green Bay, they gave it a team sack — and there were a couple in my arms that I didn’t get it. Or the ones that I was that close. The ones at the end of the year… It was kinda like, ‘Ah, bummed out. Now I’m 23 away again, versus one away.’ But when you start working out again, it’s motivation. How can I push myself just a little further?”
How can he take that next step? Allen has an idea.
“I always think it comes down to conditioning,” Allen said. “Maybe if I had one more step or this and that. So, you go back and watch film and try to correct technique and just use it as motivation to go to work. It’s always a personal goal. And if I’m fortunate enough and blessed enough to break it one day, I’m going to try to break it again. It’s always a personal goal, but personal goals never get in the way of team goals. Our ultimate goal is to win a championship. Otherwise, there’s no point in playing the game.”
He was asked if two a game is possible. He joked that, as much as QBs throw it, maybe. But really, he added, “Two a game? I don’t know if two a game is possible.”
“I think 25 is possible,” Allen said. “I thinks someone will eventually get it. Look at some of the athletes, the DeMarcus Ware’s of the league and the matchups he creates as a 3-4 guy on a running back or something. I think it’s possible. Then again, no one’s ever had two 20-sack seasons in their career in the history of the NFL. So, someone’s gotta do that first. Like I said, I believe 25 is a number that will get hit one year. But when, I don’t know?”
