The last time the Eagles headed into a training camp, the optimism was crazy. Yes, yes, you remember the Dream Team. Well, all of that is no more. Instead, what’s left is a team with really good players. But there is still optimism mixed in.
I watched the Eagles go through their final workout of mini-camp, a high-tempo affair with Vick right in the center. And afterward, he told me what he thought.
“We had a good camp, a good spring, and we feel good about it,” Vick told me. “Ready to let this momentum carry over into training camp. … We can relax now, enjoy the days off, and take the days as they come.”
As I said, the practice was intense, and Vick felt it. He also left with a serious sense of purpose.
“We feel good,” Vick continued. “Feel like we accomplished a lot. Worked hard each and every day. I think the defense did phenomenal job and the offense, we really learned a lot and really put in the work in order to get better. It was very competitive, almost like a game-type atmosphere each and can’t ask for more.”
A lot of the good feeling comes from coach Andy Reid. Reid said with a straight face that he always has fun. But really, it seems he’s having more fun now. Why? Maybe less to lose. He knows it’ll be a big year either way.
“I just see his intensity up a little bit,” receiver DeSean Jackson said of his coach. “He’s always been intense, a high-intensity coach. It’s an eagerness about him right now. I don’t think he’s going to let anything stop that. As long as he can motivate players and the coaches. One thing I think he’s doing a great job of is being competitive with Marty Morningwheg and Juan Castillo because once we come out on that field the way our offense and defense is competing right now, it’s amazing. We’re just out there having fun and we’re just looking forward to this year.”
Jackson pointed out that Reid knows “How important this year is for us, and he’s going to be working our tails off at camp. I think everybody as a team, we have to be accountable to still work out during this time and come back to training camp prepared.”
So… Is Reid having more fun?
“I’m enjoying it,” Reid said. “I’m enjoying the personality of this team right now and I like how they’ve approached things. We have a ton to work on.”
