Three and out: Jones-Drew could hold out

Drew the line: Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew has decided to skip this week’s mandatory minicamp in response to the Jags’ refusal to give him a new contract. NFL Network’s Albert Breer reports the back will not report to camp with the rest of his teammates on Tuesday. Adding to the drama, Tania Ganguli from The Florida Times-Union has been told the hold out could extend into the regular season. Just a year ago, Titans running back Chris Johnson held out until September. The result was Johnson finishing with career lows in rushing yardage and touchdowns. Though it isn’t guaranteed Jones-Drew will suffer the same fate, fantasy owners will need to keep tabs on the situation. Expectations of the elite fantasy back might have to be reigned in if the holdout turns lengthy.

CJ2K to see fewer touches: Reported by David Climer of The Tennessean, the days of Titans running back Chris Johnson getting 25 touches per game might be over. When talking about the back, Titans OC Chris Palmer stated “To say you’re going to get a guy 25 touches a game is pushing it.” Johnson’s low production totals last season serves as the current cautionary tale for fantasy owners with their eyes set on Jones-Drew. CJ2K only had 20 or more touches in six games last year, four of them resulting in his only 100-plus-yard rushing performances. If the speedy back can return to form with a full offseason of conditioning, fewer touches won’t hinder his fantasy value. Johnson is still one of the most explosive backs in the league and should be an early round selection in fantasy drafts.

Taming Tebow: New York Jets coach Rex Ryan stated quarterback Tim Tebow will be “running with the twos” in minicamp. Ryan has been committed to Mark Sanchez as the starter, leaving Tebow to play the hybrid role once filled by ex-Jet and current Bills quarterback Brad Smith. Tebow will be an appealing name in fantasy drafts due to his past successes, but his value is minimized given his current role.
