Cowboys coach Jason Garrett says “We’re not going to trade” Mike Jenkins, expects him back soon

Lots of drama surrounding Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins/AP

The Dallas Cowboys wrapped up their second day of OTAs a few minutes ago, but their first open to the media. One player not present was CB Mike Jenkins, who has made known his desire to be traded (for real at some point). He’s also rehabbing a shoulder injury, so he wouldn’t be participating anyway.

A few minutes ago, coach Jason Garrett seemed pretty clear on two things: He wants Jenkins to be here, and the team isn’t trading the disgruntled defensive back.

Mike Jenkins, we believe, is a big part of our football team right now,” Garrett said. “He’s making a business decision not to be here. But we’re not going to trade him. We like Mike Jenkins, we expect him to be a part of our team. We want to get him healthy, gotta get him back.”

In the final year of his contract, desiring a big, new one, Jenkins is staying home. Garrett said the team has been in contact with him. But he also pointed out how much everyone else has been doing, perhaps as a way of showing what Jenkins has not been doing.

We’re concerned about Mike Jenkins’ health, first and foremost,” Garrett said. “He had the surgery soon after the season ended, he’s been in rehab down in Florida. We’ve been in communication with him, he seems to be getting better. We want Mike Jenkins around our football team, just like we want everybody around our football team. We have 60 guys on our roster for most of the offseason, and we had 59 guys at our facility working out, involved in our program. We have 90 guys on our team now, we’ve pretty much had 89 guys around here now doing everything we wanted them to do. Everybody’s been here. This is all voluntary as you know, so we can’t force anybody to be here, but fortunately we have the kind guys who want to be here working. We’ve been in communication with Mike. We want Mike to be here. When he has to be here, he will be here. We’d like to have him here before then, but that’s his decision right now.

Does Garrett know Jenkins will here for mandatory mini-camp? Sounded like it, though that decision hadn’t been made by Jenkins’ camp as of yesterday. As always, stay tuned…

Meanwhile, DBs coach Jerome Henderson said Jenkins is missing a lot not being here.

Obviously he’s missing a lot,” Henderson said. “We’ve got some new things this year, and I’m missing a chance to get to know him like on the field better and (him) getting a chance to know me. So, he is missing some things, but Mike’s a pro. Once he gets that situation settled, he’ll be here and ready to go.”

Henderson and Jenkins have talked, but Henderson didn’t detail those conversations. He said he is hopeful, though.

I’m always hopeful,” he said. “I’m eternally hopeful and optimistic. That’s just who I am and how I operate.”
