Gronkd again: Why my Thursday nights in the summer just got reallllllllllly busy…

Gronk wore a stupid hat for part of his Super Bowl XLVI media day interview/AP

The summer is usually a slow time in this business. Teams wrap up their mini-camps on June 14, then go off into hibernation until preseason training camp in late July. That’s a decent chunk of time to not do much at all. Sure, there is golf to play (and I need to find a place in Dallas). And there are tans to work on. But what else?

Well, I just found something. And it’s awesomely ridiculous.

Fox has a new dating show (as we told you about here), which usually is a guarantee of something I won’t be watching. I mean, unless they bring back Elimidate, I’m out. And this show, which features celebrities hearing pitches from non-celebrities who want to date them, sounds just as absurd as all of them.

Whatever. I’m in this time. Because I just took a look at the list of celebrity participants and one sticks outGronk.

Yup, the Patriots all-world, touchdown-scoring, football-spiking machine┬áis invading your TV to listen to an outlandish explanation from some random girls as to why they want to date him. I assume Rob Gronkowski has no trouble finding a date in real life, yet maybe this will be a match made in… not Heaven. But somewhere.

I enjoyed covering Gronk for two years in New England, and it would be tough to find a young star whose profile is rising so quickly. But it’s hard to not notice the fantastic awkwardness that happens when he goes on TV. Gronk kinda just says what he thinks, and he’s as regular a dude as an NFL player can be. That leads to some hilarious exchanges. I can only imagine this will be the same.

This is only the beginning for the former second-round pick. If he kills it here in what is really his national, off-the-field debut, his dance card will be plenty full of offers for appearances and advertisements. It will no doubt send Gronk Nation into a tizzy.

The rest of the list isn’t bad, too, with NFL Network’s Warren Sapp, Lions DT Ndamukong Suh, and former returner Jeremy Bloom also making cameos. It’s not clear which night Gronk or these other guys will appear, so I’ll just have to watch every episode. Also, I think I’m getting old, because I haven’t heard of most of the guys on this list. And some I have heard of, I wish I never did — I’m talking to you, Rob Kardashian.

But anyway, this is on Thursdays starting June 7, so I’ll be busy during that time. Don’t be hurt if I don’t answer my phone when it’s on, because this beautiful thing will need my full concentration. I just wonder if Patriots coach Bill Belichick will be watching, too…
