Saints, considering several coach options, including Parcells

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Saints and head coach Sean Payton are considering several options with their coaching staff for the 2012 season, according to a league source, including hiring Bill Parcells on an interim basis.

Payton also is undecided if he will appeal his penalties.

One source said that Parcells is under consideration, but noted that the team is mulling several scenarios and hiring Parcells was not likely at this point. This is an unprecedented situation — Payton being suspended without pay for a year — and the Saints are working as best they can to put themselves in position to succeed despite the harsh sanctions against the organizations.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo also is an option to replace Payton during his suspension, though, in that case, the team might want to add a coordinator to fill Spagnuolo’s duties. However, that also raises questions as to who would do the job for just a year, and whether it’s best for Payton or Spagnuolo to make the hire. The Saints could also opt to promote an offensive coach as interim head coach, but then that too takes away from brainpower devoted to preparation and game planning.

Payton is trying to stay focused on the pressing matters of fortifying and preparing his staff for the imminent changes afoot, and with several coaches preparing for vacation, that work supercedes anything going on at this week’s NFL Annual Meeting in Florida.

Payton is expected at the meetings on Tuesday though the team said it is undetermined at this point if he will speak to the media.

Payton is also still mulling a possible appeal of his suspension, and a decision on that matter has not been made yet, sources said. He has until April 2 to file an appeal.
