North Carolina’s pro day was held on March 20, outdoors on field turf, in front of representatives from 27 NFL teams. Most were there to see DE Quinton Coples, but a number of other prospects stood out as well.
Here’s a recap:
Coples, DE (6-foot-5 3/4, 278 pounds) — Coples stood on all his marks from the NFL Combine, but had a very good workout at DE and LB and probably solidified his status as a top-10 draft pick.
Zach Brown, LB (6-1 1/2, 242) Ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 and 4.49 seconds, with a 35-inch vertical, 4.32-second short shuttle, 7.26-second three-cone and 22 strength reps. Brown is a great athlete and worked out very well, but there are questions about how competitive he is. He could be a first-rounder, or he could slip back.
Matt Merletti, S (5-10, 200) — Ran the 40 in 4.55 and 4.64 seconds, with a 31 1/2-inch vertical, 4.27-second short shuttle, 6.55-second three-cone and 31 strength reps. A very smart player who will probably excel on special teams, Merletti looks like a seventh-rounder or a priority free agent.
Charles Brown, CB (5-8 3/4, 209) — Ran the 40 in 4.49 and 4.50 seconds. Stood on his other combine marks but did position drills and looks like a seventh-round pick.
Tydreke Powell, DT (6-2 3/8, 312) — Ran the 40 in 5.25 and 5.32 seconds. Powell had a good workout and is an ascending player who stands to go in the fourth or fifth round.
