When QB Andrew Luck began throwing at Stanford’s pro day on Thursday, he impressed NFL Network’s Paul Burmeister and draft analyst Mike Mayock with his initial ability to cut through the relatively heavy wind.

Luck was throwing in the direction of Burmeister and Mayock, giving them a good perspective on the spiral he was getting on the ball.

Burmeister said that the ball “is spinning and he’s spinning it easily” when it was coming out of Luck’s hand. The “high” rpm, he said, kept it from getting caught in the wind.

“How it comes out of his hand affects whether it can cut through the wind,” Mayock said.

Mayock said quarterback coaches told him that they were impressed with Luck’s willingness to throw in such conditions.

The coaches said that “the fact that this kid’s willing to come out here in this kind of element… tells you a lot” Mayock said.

Luck did have a couple of less-than-perfect throws near the beginning of the workout, but Mayock was impressed with his ability to adjust as the session progressed.

“I can’t underscore this enough,” Mayock said. “We’re outdoors on a windy day, he made two bad throws to start, and now he’s fine.”
