Luck getting ready to throw in the cold at pro day

Top QB prospect (and presumed No. 1 draft pick) Andrew Luck will be showing observers how he handles less-than-perfect weather conditions when he throws at Stanford’s pro day on Thursday.

The temperature was a relatively chilly 55 degrees Fahrenheit shortly before Luck was scheduled to throw. The prospect will not be running.

Luck’s workout is coming one day after fellow top prospect Robert Griffin III wowed scouts with his performance at Baylor’s pro day Wednesday, even prompting some to suggest that Griffin III, not Luck, should be the Colts’ choice with the top pick in April.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said he still thinks the Colts will go with Luck.

“I think he fits what Indianapolis wants to do,” Mayock said Thursday on NFL Network. “I think he’ll be the face of their franchise.”

Mayock praised Luck’s anticipation and timing.

“He makes all the throws that you want to see him make in the NFL,” Mayock said. “He anticipates routes before they come open, he throws into tiny windows with confidence.”

To those who would question Luck’s arm strength, Mayock cited two notable pros — the Saints’ Drew Brees and the Falcons’ Matt Ryan — as examples of quarterbacks who have been very successful with less-than-elite arms.

Luck, Mayock said, “throws the ball so easily, it looks like he’s not trying to rip it, but it gets there.”
