Now about those 49ers receivers in fantasy land

Saturday Night Live‘s Seth Meyers might have summed up the 49ers’ current quarterback situation perfectly with this tweet: “Heyyyyyyyyyyyy, Alex. It’s the Niners. Yeah…….Can you give us a call?”

I touched on this briefly in our Three and out blog earlier Monday, but who is going to play quarterback for San Francisco this season? Peyton Manning will sign a deal with the Broncos, which might be a big miscalculation for the the 49ers. Especially since Alex Smith was courted by the Dolphins over the weekend.

So now Alex has something we like to call leverage. Well not too much, however.

Playing for the Dolphins has become about as desirable as investing in Miami real estate in recent years, so the thinking right now is that Smith will return to the 49ers. And if he does, he’s going to find a lot of new faces in the locker room, including Randy Moss and Mario Manningham, who recently joined the team.

Now if you’re expecting a huge season from Manningham, pump the brakes a bit. The 49ers will continue to be a run-based offense, and Manningham’s numbers should be what you’ve come to expect in recent seasons — if they are even that good. Manningham would have had a chance for some bigger numbers if Manning had signed with the team, but not so much with Smith, Colin Kaepernick or any other quarterback the 49ers might turn to.

I’m recommend you avoid Manningham in the coming season.
