If the Broncos land QB Peyton Manning, NFL Network’s Mike Mayock thinks they’ll become a significantly better team.
How much better? Try championship caliber.
“The bottom line is, this guy’s special,” Mayock said Friday on NFL Network. “There’s only been a couple of guys like him in the history of the NFL. If he’s healthy and playing at his level, then the only two words that come to my mind are Super Bowl.”
Mayock suggested that the Broncos should try to give Manning all the offensive weapons they can find, naming restricted free-agent WR Mike Wallace and TE Dallas Clark as possible targets. Even though signing Wallace would mean coughing up a first-round draft pick, Mayock thinks it would be worth it to arm Manning with the tools he needs to make a run at a title.
“I’d be really just getting everybody I could get on the offensive side of the ball and say, okay, Peyton, it’s up to you to win a Super Bowl, let’s go,” Mayock said.
Mayock said that the Broncos will likely look for the same things in a workout with Manning as they would in a workout with a top college prospect, asking him to make 60-70 throws. The team will want to make sure Manning has the strength and endurance necessary to succeed.
“Can he throw an 18-yard comeback, far hash, on the 65th throw? Can he throw a go-route 60 yards on the 70th throw?” Mayock said. “I’ve talked to some people that have seen him throw the football live, and everybody’s been highly impressed with what he’s been able to do. My only question is, does he have the arm strength, the muscle strength, the ability to drive it when he’s tired? And if he had all those things, I’d feel pretty comfortable.”
On Friday, news broke that Broncos leadership, including John Elway, were on their way to North Carolina to give Manning another look. The Titans are also set to watch him work out. Manning has already met with Denver and Tennessee as he decides where to play next.
