Lions WR Calvin Johnson‘s new deal created roughly $10 million in salary-cap space for Detroit in 2012, according to a league source.

Under his previous deal, Johnson would have counted for more than $20 million against the cap next season. He now will count for $11.5M in 2012.

Johnson received a $16 million signing bonus. The deal also has a $20 million option bonus. Johnson will get a $1.25 million base salary in 2012; he also picked up a $4.5 million roster bonus from his existing contract. He will make a total of $22 million in the first year of the deal.

In 2013, he will count for $12 million against the salary cap and makes $5 million guaranteed, with a $20 million option bonus. In 2014, Johnson will make $5 million guaranteed. In 2015, his base salary will be $12.5 million; in 2016, he will make $15.9 million in base (with $9 million guaranteed). In 2017, he is set to make $16.5 million. His salary jumps to $17 million in 2018 and $18.25 million in 2019.

Years 2018 and 2019 void, but can be bought back by the team if it guarantees $3.5 million in each of those years.
