DeSean Jackson got his money.
The receiver’s new deal with the Eagles is worth $48.5 million over five years, according to a league source.
It’s a big move for Jackson, who previously was sitting on the franchise tag, a guaranteed one-year deal worth $9.5 million. The Eagles had been hesitant to do a long-term deal for Jackson, and he is coming off what was a subpar season for him on and off the field.
So for Jackson to land this contract now is a substantial accomplishment. Generally, on a deal like this, at least half the money is guaranteed, and the Eagles could well have structured the deal like Tampa Bay did with Vincent Jackson and Miami did with Brandon Marshall.
In those cases, after the first year or two of the deal, the team can get out of the contract with minimal cap hits, and the deal essentially works like a series of one-year contracts with a high base salary.
